Biking the Timber Ridge Trail: A High-Altitude Adventure

For mountain bikers craving a challenge, the Timber Ridge Trail in the New River Gorge delivers in spades. This 5-mile trail runs along a ridge high above the Gorge, offering heart-pounding climbs, fast descents, and sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness. With its rugged terrain and exhilarating flow, Timber Ridge is a must-ride for experienced cyclists looking to test their skills and soak in the beauty of West Virginia’s wild landscape.

The trail begins at the top of the ridge, accessible from the Arrowhead Trails system or other nearby routes. Right away, Timber Ridge lets you know it’s not messing around. The terrain varies from packed dirt to loose rocks, with sections of roots and sharp switchbacks keeping riders on their toes. The initial ascent is a grind, but the payoff comes quickly: a thrilling descent with bermed corners and natural jumps that let you cut loose.

One of the highlights of Timber Ridge is its sheer variety. The trail alternates between open ridgelines, where the views stretch for miles, and dense forest, where the air smells of pine and the world feels wonderfully remote. Wildlife sightings are common, with hawks soaring overhead and deer darting through the underbrush.

The trail’s technical features, including rock gardens and steep drops, make it best suited for intermediate to advanced riders. Those who relish a challenge will find Timber Ridge’s rugged personality rewarding, while less experienced riders may want to stick to nearby trails like Easy Street or Aero for a smoother experience.

For riders seeking a high-energy adventure with the best views in the Gorge, Timber Ridge Trail stands tall—literally. It’s not just a ride; it’s a deep dive into the thrilling topography and untamed beauty of the New River Gorge.

Great, laid-back spot with food to hit the spot after a ride… and the beer selection! They have you covered. We rolled in not knowing what to expect. The bike shop fixed up my son with a new tire and offered up some guidance where to ride. Will definitely be back!

We camped here Thursday to Sunday and had a great time. The vibe here is super laid back, lots of tent campers and a few rv spots. All the staff is really nice, with a great bathhouse. The bike park is a great feature even if we didn’t ride it. I would totally recommend anyone, whether you’re a family or a group of friends stay here!

I LOVE this campsite! It has everything you need- perfect location for exploring, spacious sites, goats, food and drink, bikes, dog-friendly, and the bathrooms were clean. Easy check-in and friendly staff!

This place is awesome! Where else can you camp, get a beer and learn mountain biking! They were so accommodating and let us book a mountain biking course and trail w less than the required 48 hours notice. Our guide and instructor, Aspen, was patient, encouraging and helped us have a great time despite us being Flatlanders from Florida! A beer or beverage at the end of your trip is included. We will definitely be back to camp here!

Awesome bike rental location. Reasonably priced, right next to trails including some of the best views in New River national park, so don’t need a rack or big car or anything. Didn’t get a chance to try out the food or beers but the vibe was on point for sure.
