Imagine your tires skimming over tightly-packed singletrack, navigating gnarly roots and rock gardens, catapulting you up steep climbs and hairpin turns, all while pine-scented air whips by. Here, the trails challenge you to balance courage with control, a visceral ride through a forest that pushes back.

Spread across 11 miles, Sherman Branch’s trails are the handiwork of the Tarheel Trailblazers, Charlotte’s local mountain biking heroes. I've always enjoyed riding here. Just enough features to be fun without being too taxing on a casual rider and the trail was built in a way that never wears you out climbing. (Of course harder trails have a place, but I can bring new riders here with me and they still have a good time).

I didn't get too deep into the Sherman Branch Nature Preserve today as I'm on foot. And I'm alone. This looks like a fantastic opportunity for some mountain biking as the park is largely still in its natural state other than the trails and markings and even a bridge over the creek. In late October, the leaves are turning making for some fabulous colors. The trailhead includes a dirt parking lot, a sign with the map of the park (take a picture so you can remember better!) and a couple of port-a-potties. The park gate closes at dark but if you drive up to it, you can leave. It just won't open for entries until morning.

Still a great spot for single track mountain biking for intermediate and advanced riders. Great variety of terrain and short punchy climbs and long sweeping downhills. Great lake views from the Lake Loop.

Sherman Branch Nature Preserve was a great day out in Charlotte hiking and exploring. There were quite a few bikers on the day we visited. The trails are clean and clearly marked. We visited in the fall, so there were a lot of leaves on the ground. We hiked for around 1.5 hours, but you can easily explore for longer. It’s great walking under the canopy of trees. There’s a smallish parking area with space for parking. I’ll be back here.

I know these trails like the back of my hand. My go-to trails for all my night runs. Bikers beware!!! These aren't just trials for bikes, share the trails. Most bikers are kind but some feel they own the trails
