Mountain Biking the Wanoga Trail System in Bend

There’s a wild kind of music in the Wanoga Trail System near Bend, Oregon. It’s not just the chirp of crickets or the whisper of pines—it’s the metallic chatter of gears, the whip of cool air, and the exultant cries of riders dancing with gravity. This is no passive woodland meander; it’s a heart-pounding dialogue between rider and earth, each twist and turn a new challenge.

Wanoga’s trails are nature’s roller coasters, shaped by volcanic forces and human artistry. “Tiddlywinks” tempts you with silky berms and tabletop jumps, a ribbon of pure momentum that makes every rider feel like a virtuoso. Meanwhile, “Funner” is the untamed sibling, a gauntlet of roots, rock gardens, and sharp descents. It doesn’t just test your skills—it tests your mettle.

Riding here is a journey through Bend’s high desert beauty. Ponderosa pines loom like watchful guardians, their needles filtering sunlight into pools of gold. The grit of volcanic dust under your tires whispers stories of ancient eruptions, and the Cascade peaks wink from afar, promising glory for those who climb high enough.

When the descent begins, time slows. Adrenaline sharpens your focus as the trail pulls you forward, a fleeting masterpiece of speed and control. Every rider becomes an artist, each line their own creation. At Wanoga, you don’t just ride—you etch a piece of your soul into the trail.

Great place for a variety of family and solo activities. We came here in January during heavy blizzard conditions, but no regrets. One part of the family did snowmobiling, others did sledding, kids built snow castles and others enjoyed cross-country skiing. When you come from the highway to the sno-park, to the right you will find snowmobile parking lot and trails as well as an absolutely wonderful warming shelter hut with a wood fire stove and picnic tables where you can have lunch and dry your gloves. To the left there will be a dedicated parking for those interested in cross-country, snow shoeing, hiking and sledding from an impressive high hill. Both parking lots are equipped with bathrooms, well maintained, snow regularly plowed.

We visited here on a Friday and Saturday at the end of January 2021. We took our three kids (ages 10, 7, and 5). We all had a blast and sledded for several hours each day. Friday crowds weren't bad, but Saturday was quite crowded and we almost couldn't find a place to park. The hill is nice and steep, so sleds and tubes of all types worked well on the slope. Lots of moguls when we wnet. Also, bring your own TP if you plan to use the bathrooms - they were completely out on both days! Don't forget to purchase a Sno Park parking pass at a local business before you go!

Absolutely love this. 30 min drive from Bend, outdoor fireplaces, warm bathroom, mini lodge with wood burning fireplace, bring your own wood. The sledding area is steep enough to have a blast but not so steep kids get hurt. One side has Moguls which act as jump for sleds. Other side has non. Perfect sledding area for while family. We will be back for sure. This area was clean, plenty of room for a snack.
