Great place to spend the night on way in or way out of Rock Harbor. Highly recommend Tobin Bay Trail rather than Rock Harbor trail for access. A little longer, but much easier and safer if carrying a backpack. Views along both are beautiful.

I stopped here on my first night trekking from Rock Harbor to Windigo. It is a nice campground with plenty of those cool shelters. I ran into a "friendly" fox that followed me a round for awhile, I imagine hoping I'd feed him (I did not). It stormed the evening I slept there and I still remember the silhouette of the trees with every lightning flash - the only light that night.

The first campsite out of Rock Harbor on Isle Royale. Easy 2.7 mile walk. Yes, I understand the irony of the campground being called 3 Mile. Look for shelter 11 or 12.

Busy August had us share a site with dear friends we met on the trail. The dock was quite a social place with easy water access. Busy Rock Harbor was full of boats: not quite the serenity of the West end of the island. Blueberries were plentiful along the trail to the northeast. Great access to the rest of the island and a quick hike back to the Rock Harbor dock from here.
