Rock Climbing at Bubba City: A Hidden Gem in the New River Gorge

Tucked away within the expansive New River Gorge, Bubba City offers climbers a secluded haven of diverse routes and serene natural beauty. This extensive climbing area is divided into several distinct crags, each presenting unique challenges and experiences for climbers of varying skill levels.

Location and Access

Bubba City is located near Fayetteville, West Virginia. To access the climbing areas, take U.S. Route 19 and turn onto Gatewood Road. Continue for approximately 1.5 miles until you reach the designated parking area on the right, just past Peregrine Ridge Road. From there, cross the street and follow the marked trail, which includes a ladder and rope descent, leading directly to the base of the cliffs.

Climbing Experience

Bubba City boasts a variety of sandstone cliffs, offering both sport and traditional climbing routes. The area is divided into several sectors, including Central Bubba, Head Wall, and Ames Wall, each featuring its own set of routes that cater to different skill levels. The rock quality is exceptional, with solid Nuttall sandstone providing excellent friction and a range of features such as cracks, overhangs, and face climbs.

One of the standout features of Bubba City is its relative seclusion compared to more popular areas in the Gorge. Climbers can enjoy a tranquil environment, often with fewer crowds, allowing for a more personal connection with the rock and surroundings. The routes vary in length and difficulty, providing ample opportunities for both beginners and seasoned climbers to find suitable challenges.

Historical Significance

Bubba City has been a significant part of the New River Gorge climbing scene since its early development. The area has seen numerous first ascents and has been a training ground for climbers looking to test their skills on the region's renowned sandstone. The diversity of routes and the quality of climbing have solidified Bubba City's reputation as a must-visit destination within the Gorge.

Guided Climbing Opportunities

For those new to the area or seeking to enhance their skills, local outfitters offer guided climbing experiences at Bubba City. These guided trips cater to all levels, providing instruction and insight into the best routes, ensuring a safe and enjoyable climbing adventure.

Important Considerations

  • Permits and Regulations: Climbers should adhere to National Park Service regulations and check for any required permits before their visit. Group sizes may be limited to minimize environmental impact.

  • Seasonal Factors: The best climbing conditions are typically found in late spring and early fall, when temperatures are moderate. South-facing cliffs can become quite warm during the summer months, so plan accordingly.

  • Safety: Always inspect fixed gear and anchors before use, and be prepared for the technical nature of the routes. Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended due to potential rockfall.

Climbing at Bubba City offers a unique and rewarding experience, combining challenging routes with the natural splendor of the New River Gorge. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a newcomer to the sport, the cliffs of Bubba City provide an adventure that is both physically demanding and profoundly enriching.

We had a wonderful experience with New River Mountain Guides! Patrick was an excellent guide. Our group (pre-teen to adult) had experience with indoor climbing and wanted to learn about and safely experience outdoor climbing. Patrick skillfully adapted the trip to our interests. He was efficient, patient and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend Patrick and NRMG!

Absolutely amazing experience! So grateful we selected New River Mountain Guides to help us with our outdoor climbing at the gorge. Matthew was incredible and went out of his way to make sure we had a great day climbing. He set up the routes for us and he also taught us some new skills. He made sure we were safe the entire day and made our experience special. Thank you for being there for the novice climbers to make our experience so positive. We are eager to come back!

We had the best experience with Jennifer from NRMG! Neither me nor my 10yo had rock climbed before and she made it so fun and we learned a lot. I am terrified of heights and didn't actually plan to climb (I booked it for my son) but Jennifer was so great, she made it not scary at all. We got to do several different climbs and a big repel. She even found a shady spot on a super hot day 10/10, would recommend her!
