Scaling San Francisco’s Living Mosaic: The Moraga Steps

In a city where every hill challenges your legs and rewards your soul, one climb stands out as a celebration of art and elevation. The Moraga Steps on 16th Avenue in San Francisco are more than just a staircase—they’re a living mosaic, a vibrant ode to the spirit of community and creativity.

At first glance, the 163 steps seem humble. But as you take your first step, you’re drawn into an ocean of color. Each tile, uniquely hand-painted, bursts with themes of nature, sky, and sea, creating a cascade of beauty that feels alive. These tiles, crafted by over 300 local artists and volunteers, have transformed this climb into a stunning public art installation that pulls you upward.

The ascent feels like unlocking the city’s secrets. Every few steps, the view shifts—the glint of Golden Gate Park here, the hazy blue of the Pacific there. The higher you go, the more you’re immersed in the grand tapestry of San Francisco itself. At the top, a breezy panorama unfurls, where the scent of salt air mingles with a horizon that seems to stretch forever.

And if you’re still hungry for adventure, Grandview Park awaits, just beyond the steps. It’s a short hike, but the payoff is massive: a 360-degree view that feels like you’ve stepped into a postcard.

What a beauty these are. The steps are beautiful, vibrant colors which show the love and effort of whoever created them. The views from top of the stairs are amazing too.

The backside steps to get up to Grandview Park. You get a view from Sutro tower, across downtown, to Golden Gate Park.

I know the place as mosaic steps or hidden garden steps but unsure if I’m wrong. It’s easily accessible, 50metre walk from the main road and tram towards the Ocean. I found the place after a nice walk through Golden State park. It also leads to a neighbourhood on top with good houses and great views of the pacific ocean.
