Hiking the Liberty Lake Loop Trail: A Journey of Contrast and Discovery

The Liberty Lake Loop Trail doesn’t hand you its wonders all at once—it teases them out, unveiling a new marvel with every turn. Situated at Spokane’s eastern boundary, this 8.3-mile loop weaves together the region’s diverse landscapes into a single unforgettable trek. From the hum of wetlands to the roar of cascading waterfalls, every step feels like an invitation to explore nature’s boundless creativity.

The journey begins in the wetlands, where boardwalks carry you over a labyrinth of reeds and cattails. The air here is alive with movement: frogs leaping into hidden pools, dragonflies darting like jeweled messengers, and the occasional rustle of unseen creatures. Just as the gentle rhythm lulls you, the trail tilts upward.

In the forest, shadows and light play an endless game, with towering cedars casting dappled patterns across the path. The ascent demands your focus, each switchback carving upward like the trail’s own heartbeat. Then, you hear it—a crescendo of rushing water. The waterfall, tumbling over mossy rocks, greets you with its cool mist and hypnotic roar. Pause here; it’s a moment that will linger long after the hike is done.

At the summit, the world opens wide. Liberty Lake glimmers below, its surface catching the sun’s golden rays. The wind carries whispers of pine resin and the faint brine of distant waters, a sensory reminder of how far you’ve climbed. Descending, the wetlands reappear, now aglow with the amber hues of late afternoon, offering a gentle close to a challenging day.

The Liberty Lake Loop Trail isn’t just a hike—it’s a journey through nature’s contrasts, a celebration of its many moods and mysteries.

Easy to find and has ample parking. The trail is easy to follow and is marked. There was snow and compact ice which increased difficulty level. I look fwd to returning in the Spring when the snow and ice are gone. Plenty of fresh water along the trail. There is a beach also and a kids play toy. They have bbq's in the ground heading towards the trail which could be great for a picnic.

We couldn’t find it — we went up Idaho Rd, past the ORV park, past the equestrian trailhead, and continued on the dirt road past a few sign that said the road was closed a couple miles up, and when we got to the large sign saying we were now entering a private road (and Google maps said we had several miles left to go), so between the warning about the closed road and then that sign about it being private, we assumed Google was mapping incorrectly and turned back. Not sure if this is no longer accessible, or we’re too early in the season (it’s mid May, Mother’s Day) and there’s a gate that’s closed (according to several posted signs on Idaho Rd), or what the deal is. If it’s seasonal access, I wish a website would say that. There were no signs anywhere along the way that we saw that mentioned the Cedar Grove, how to get there, how many miles left to go, etc.

One of my favorite hikes. Good parking at trail head, plenty of shade for those hot days, fairly easy hike and a good distance.
