Hiking the Avalanche Peak Trail in Yellowstone National Park

Not all hikes are created equal, and Avalanche Peak proves that some are designed to take your breath away—literally and figuratively. At 10,566 feet, this is one of Yellowstone’s loftiest summits, a climb that demands effort but delivers views that will linger in your soul long after you descend.

The trail begins with no preamble, diving immediately into a steep ascent through dense subalpine forest. The air smells of pine and damp earth, and the path twists upward with little mercy. The climb is a test of resolve, but glimpses of the surrounding ridges through the trees remind you why you’re here.

At around 1.5 miles, the trees part, and you step into another world. Above the treeline, the landscape feels wild and infinite. The trail, now rocky and exposed, winds upward through a stark alpine environment where the wind carries a sharp edge, and marmots scurry among the rocks.

The summit is pure magic. To the east, the Absaroka Range rolls out like an ocean of stone, its jagged peaks dusted with snow. To the west, Yellowstone Lake sprawls like a sapphire dropped into the wilderness, its waters shimmering in the sunlight. The horizon stretches in every direction, a dizzying panorama that makes the climb feel both humbling and triumphant.

Avalanche Peak isn’t just a hike—it’s a challenge, an accomplishment, and a love letter to Yellowstone’s wild, untamed spirit. Whether you’re gazing out at the endless vistas or catching your breath in the alpine breeze, you’ll know this isn’t just a place to visit; it’s a place to remember.

Amazing views up top. Worth the climb. The trail is well maintained. The second half of the climb was all exposed. It was about 2,000ft of gain in 2.3 miles. Also good service with Verizon on the summit

Hands down the BEST hiking in Yellowstone National Park! You will NOT regret the push and reward at the top of Avalanche Peak! Unfortunately, there is no bar at the top, bring your own Summit Beer!

Loved this hike, recommend bring some water and food. About 3-4 miles, pretty steep once you get going up the actual mountain peaks. Very pretty hike on the way up, saw some deer, moss and mushrooms. Took us about 2-2.5 hours total (we were going fast.)
