Running the Deschutes River Trail: Bend’s Most Scenic Route

The Deschutes River Trail is more than just a running path—it’s an immersive journey through the heart of Central Oregon’s natural beauty. Winding along the riverbank, this trail offers a mix of smooth pathways, rugged singletrack, and awe-inspiring scenery. Whether you’re in it for a quick jog or a long, meditative run, every stride feels like a celebration of the wild.

The trail starts with the gentle murmur of the Deschutes River, its crystal-clear waters weaving through lava flows and juniper-covered hills. Early morning runs are pure magic, with golden sunlight filtering through ponderosa pines and the crisp air awakening your senses. The soft crunch of dirt underfoot becomes a rhythm, harmonizing with the occasional calls of birds and the distant rustle of deer moving through the brush.

As you move deeper into the trail, the landscape shifts. Sections of smooth dirt path give way to rugged terrain, where rocks and roots demand focus and precision. The river’s flow quickens in places, tumbling over rapids that energize the air with a cool mist. Elevated sections of the trail offer breathtaking views of the canyon below, a reminder of the power and beauty of the river carving its way through the land.

For those seeking a longer challenge, the trail’s network can connect you to miles of paths leading all the way to Tumalo State Park or Lava Island Falls. Each turn reveals something new: a hidden waterfall, a tranquil pool, or a bend in the river catching the sunlight just so.

By the end of your run, your legs may be tired, but your spirit will feel lighter. The Deschutes River Trail isn’t just a place to run—it’s where nature meets motion, inspiring every step with the raw beauty of Central Oregon.

Farewell Bend park is at the beginning of a trail along a awesome part of the Deschutes River trail. The park side of the river allows bikes the other side restricts the trail to walking/running. There is a bridge across the trail quite a way done that allows you to switch sides. Mountain bikes recommended.

Farewell Bend Park is a wonderful and beautiful park located in Bend Oregon along the banks of the Deschutes River. The park is constructed and designed perfectly with green spaces, playground equipment for children, paved walking paths and dirt paths, walking and biking bridges across the Deschutes River, and wetlands retained attracting local birds and wildlife. There are covered areas along the river, with sitting areas, benches along the way. This was our first visit, there was ample parking, people enjoying the park with children looking for birds and fish in the river, we pointed out baby ducks for them to see. There were people walking dogs, and playing fetch with a tennis ball. We were there about an hour and could have easily stayed the day. I've attached some pictures. If you find my review helpful please give me a thumbs-up 👍. Thank you!

Visiting Bend from out of the area. Family & I stopped by day before leaving. Set up our chairs, tent & I ( a non swimmer) even went out in the water a few times. 😊 Beautiful day, lovely environment. We enjoyed our time there.

This review is for the river float. This is our second time floating down the river as a group. It’s a lot of fun and relaxing. There is a little excitement when you reach the rapids. My tip is to lift your backside up as high as you can to minimize bumping on the rocks below going down the rapids.
