Glide Through Serenity: Paddleboarding on the Kiawah River

Paddleboarding on the Kiawah River is more than an adventure—it’s a serene escape into the pristine heart of the Lowcountry. Just a short drive from Charleston, this tranquil waterway winds through a landscape where dolphins play, marsh grasses sway, and every paddle stroke connects you to the rhythm of nature.

Begin your journey at Mingo Point, a popular launch site that offers easy access to the river’s calm, brackish waters. The Kiawah River is perfect for paddleboarding, with its gentle currents and wide expanses that feel both peaceful and inviting. Glide along, your board cutting through the glassy surface as egrets and herons patrol the banks with effortless grace.

One of the river’s most magical features is its wildlife. Bottlenose dolphins often surface nearby, sometimes coming close enough for a thrilling encounter. Look for them “strand feeding,” a unique behavior where they herd fish onto the mudflats—a spectacle unique to this region. If you’re lucky, you might also spot sea turtles or playful otters darting through the water.

As you paddle deeper into the marshes, the world quiets. The rustle of spartina grass and the distant call of an osprey become your soundtrack. Pause for a moment to take it all in: the endless expanse of green, the salty tang of the air, and the warmth of the Carolina sun on your skin. The scenery changes with the tide, creating a dynamic environment that’s endlessly captivating.

For those seeking a longer adventure, paddle toward Captain Sam’s Spit at the river’s mouth. This remote stretch of sand offers breathtaking views of where the river meets the Atlantic, a perfect spot for a rest or a picnic before heading back.

Paddleboarding on the Kiawah River isn’t just a water sport—it’s a meditative journey into the soul of the Lowcountry.

BUYER BEWARE! We purchased a rental property last year - expecting this to be a long-term, solid investment. Unfortunately, we didn't know nor were made aware of the changes that they would implement. Officially today, the powers-to-be, who are short sited and greedy, have initiated a $60 per day per room fee for any short term renters to access the amenities. This additional fee makes any investment property not competitive with other options in the area. If you plan on living at Kiawah River full time, this may still be an option, but when we were looking at investment properties, this major decision wasn't disclosed or even hinted that it would be an option down the road. This type of miscommunication or deliberate intent of not disclosing would make me cautious of purchasing any property here; as you don't know what other changes they may make down the road that are selfish and not in the best interest of the community. After owning and investing in multiple properties over the years, I would say this is the worst experience I have ever had. If you are looking to purchase a property, ours will be on the market in the near future.

What a truly magical place! Kiawah River has been designed in such a way that everyone is able to enjoy the stunning views and beautiful landscape. I’ve been incredibly impressed with the architecture and vision, it is truly one of a kind. If you haven’t had a chance to see it for yourself, it should be on your list; you won’t want to leave!

We enjoyed a lovely evening at Kiawah River with friends. The sights are unbelievable and the team is welcoming and kind. Hopeful for more events under these beautiful oaks.

A friend is considering buying into this new community. The wildlife here is so beautiful to watch...cows with heron friends...goats with human friends..《goat yoga》 and lots of pelicans hanging out. Of course we went to look at the homes and they were beautiful as we expected them to be but it was the trails throughout and the preservation of natural habitats that we loved!

The score is only related to the customer service. Not the location, beauty or concept. I think this place has a crazy amount of potential. We spent the better part of a day there with a very pleasant rep driving around, looking at the amenities, chatting about the future, etc. My wife and I were really excited. Since our visit - no calls, emails or any kind of follow up from them. I've emailed a couple of times. Nothing. That's really left a bad taste. Hard to pay millions of dollars to an entity with poor customer service. If they can't follow up with me, can they execute / deliver on anything else they say? In the long run it still could be worth the investment. If they has just followed up and made us feel like this was a good fit, it could have been a done deal.
