Surfing Wrightsville Beach: A Coastal Adventure

When dawn drapes its soft light over Wrightsville Beach, it’s as if the Atlantic stirs to life in a quiet greeting. The ocean here isn’t for the thrill-seekers alone—it’s for anyone who understands that adventure can be both heart-pounding and serene. These aren’t waves that snarl with California’s bravado or Hawaii’s thunder; they’re a different breed. Wrightsville waves speak in an accent, one touched by Southern ease, and they’re as inviting as the Carolina charm that defines this spot.

Here, the locals have an unhurried friendliness. They sip coffee on their boards at dawn, chatting between sets and nodding to newcomers, the kind of easy smiles you’d expect from folks raised on surf and sun. The waves roll in clean and easy, especially in summer, making Wrightsville a welcoming place for beginners trying to catch their first wave. But don’t let the laid-back vibe fool you—there’s fire here for the diehards, too. When the Outer Banks swell works its magic, the waters churn up long rights and brisk lefts, drawing experienced surfers to carve lines that ripple through glassy barrels.

Wrightsville Beach is more than a surfing stop. It’s a way of life. It’s salt-drenched mornings that lead to golden afternoons, ocean-washed evenings spent recounting the day’s waves. If the ocean takes a breather, paddle out to Masonboro Inlet or drift along the Intracoastal Waterway. Here, where ocean meets marshland, you’ll discover an unfiltered serenity, miles from the bustling mainland.

On this Atlantic edge, surf lessons don’t just teach you the moves—they teach you how to read the sea. Wrightsville Beach isn’t just a place; it’s an initiation into the rhythms of surf, sand, and salt air. And once you’re here, you’ll find yourself aching to return, always ready to catch that next wave.

My son (age 6) LOVED this camp and begged to sign up for a second session this summer. We will definitely be back next year. He gained ocean water confidence and has fallen in love with boogie boarding. The field trips and beach play/boogie boarding kept him engaged. The staff was kind, supportive, great with kids, and trained with water safety! At the end of the week each child was given an award to celebrate their different personalities. I couldn't recommend this camp more!

I drove 930 miles each way to take my daughter and will probably do it again. Amazing experiences, campers, and counselors. My daughter had zero negatives even though she was nervous to go. She did the Carolina Ocean Odyssey which offered a good mix of educational and recreational activities. The variety of camp options allows you to pick which experience is best for your needs. Thank you to the folks at WB Surf Camp for helping my daughter get an amazing start to her summer.

This trip to Chicama, Peru with WB Surf Camp was unreal. Surfing Chicama felt like we were on another planet. The waves were the longest and best of my life and catching my first one of the trips actually had me crying happy tears. Our coaches were amazing, the boat captains were pros, and getting drone footage of our sessions was the cherry on top. I came home with over 20 minutes of footage, which is so cool to relive. The Chicama Boutique Hotel was incredible—great staff, delicious food, cozy rooms, and the best amenities. After chilly surf sessions, nothing beats soaking in the hot plunge pool or relaxing in the sauna while watching the sunset over the waves. The vibe was amazing. Everyone—locals, staff, and the group—was so welcoming and made it all feel like home. If you’re looking to improve your surfing or just ride some of the most epic waves on Earth, this trip is a must! I’ll never forget it, and can't wait to go back next year! Thank you WB Surf Camp!!

Absolutely incredible experience that my daughter Sophia will likely never forget. Our instructor Nicole was great, she was patient, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and supportive throughout the session. Could not have asked for a better coach. The location was also really nice, not a very occupied part of the beach so the intimidation factor for a new rider was really low. The registration and communication from the entire staff and team was also terrific. I really can't say enough good things about this organization. One of, if not the best birthday gifts ever for my daughter. We are extremely happy and satisfied with the experience and looking forward to booking with them again when we are back in the area. Thank you!
