Swimming at Buttermilk Falls: A Finger Lakes Oasis

There’s a thrill at Buttermilk Falls State Park that’s hard to put into words. Imagine a place where cascading waters carve their way down shale cliffs, spilling into emerald pools—each a primal secret of the forest, waiting. Buttermilk Falls is no ordinary swimming spot; it’s an experience that brings you close to the heart of nature. Every rock face here tells a story millions of years in the making, while every shimmering ripple seems to call out, luring you closer.

Named for the foamy, ivory stream that flows with silky intensity down the stone, Buttermilk Falls lives up to its magical reputation. After trekking the Buttermilk Gorge Trail, which leads you over quaint stone bridges and through lush woodlands, the falls greet you with a view both wild and serene. The steady sound of water is a constant, pulling you toward this place that seems straight out of an old-world legend.

The swim itself is a full awakening. The water’s cool shock welcomes you, especially after a humid hike, with the Lower Falls serving as the park’s lifeguarded swimming area. Encircled by ancient stone and shaded by tall trees, this pool feels like an untouched oasis. As you wade in, look around—majestic trees, clinging moss, and a forest canopy let soft light filter through, a scene that’s as captivating as it is calming.

For the adventurous, nearby rocks offer perch points for daring dives. At Buttermilk Falls, a swim isn’t just a cool-off; it’s a chance to feel nature in its raw, beautiful form.

Absolutely breath taking views! A great hike up! You'll feel the burn because it's a moderate hike.....all uphill (gorge trail) but you'll find yourself stopping alot to take pictures! Well worth the visit!

So close to Ithaca and Cornell that you could nearly walk here. Get here first half of the day for parking. Anything in the afternoon on the weekend and you will be fighting for a spot. The park itself is gorgeous - be prepared for trails that climb significantly. The views and the scenery itself become the reward. Beautiful park to visit in the summer. And the kids loved the little swimming hole at the bottom of the falls.

Beautiful state park! Much more steeper and longer than I expected. There are a lot of stairs and you need to be careful. This is the type of place where you need supportive hiking boots or sneakers & bring plenty of water! You are able to go swimming but by the end of August, the park closes that option. I’d love to come back and swim! It really is beautiful & I’d like to go further next time. Also, the park is dog friendly!

Buttermilk Falls State Park is a beautiful park just outside Ithaca that has waterfalls, nature trails and a dam. The trails were well marked and was a mix between paved and dirt trails. Made for a nice peaceful walk. Multiple waterfalls along the trails both small and large. The dam was a cool feature of the trails. The old stone made for great pictures. Overall wasnt too busy. Look out for runners around the steps at the dam. Seemed to be very dog friendly as well. I was in town for work so I wish I had more time to explore this beautiful New York State Park. Highly recommend a visit if your in the area.

This hike is a gem but it is a climb. Its alot of stairs and mostly uphill. Allow yourself the time to go slow and take it all in...its absolutely stunning. Many dogs out this morning and good wading/ swimming for furry friends. Buttermilk is a fantastic place to marvel at amazing potholes for all of those who are geology buffs. The falls just go on and on and on...water was running well and lighting was perfect around 8a. Crowds filtering in as we left at 9:30. Nature is alive with wonder here. Be mindful of poison ivy on trails edges.
