Tubing the French Broad River in Rosman

The French Broad River winds through Rosman, North Carolina, like a liquid invitation to adventure. Its cool, steady current and gentle bends make it a tubing paradise for those who crave relaxation with a touch of wilderness. Just minutes from Brevard, this stretch of the French Broad offers a peaceful escape, where the world slows to the rhythm of the river.

Tubing here is an experience that’s as simple as it is rewarding. Launch points near Rosman provide easy access to the river, where outfitters often rent tubes and provide shuttles to and from your chosen route. The river’s flow is gentle enough for families and beginners but still lively enough to keep things interesting, with the occasional riffle to splash through and long, lazy stretches perfect for soaking in the scenery.

As you drift downstream, the forested riverbanks unfold like a storybook. Towering sycamores lean over the water, casting dappled shade, while kingfishers flit across the surface. The deeper sections of the river offer glimpses of fish darting below, while the shallower areas reveal smooth stones worn by centuries of flow. Keep an eye out for turtles basking on fallen logs or deer quietly drinking at the edge of the forest.

Tubing trips can last anywhere from an hour to a full afternoon, depending on your route and pace. Pack a dry bag with sunscreen, water, and snacks to keep the good vibes flowing. Many outfitters provide tubes with cupholders, so you can float your drink along with you—relaxation, perfected.

The French Broad in Rosman is more than a river; it’s a respite. Whether you’re laughing with friends, cooling off in the summer heat, or simply marveling at the natural world, it’s a journey that promises peace and connection.

We tubed down the French broad on July 4th. We took the earliest slot and had the river almost to ourselves for most of our float. The staff at Headwaters was kind and helpful. We put in at the store and then they picked us up and promptly returned us to the starting point as promised :). It was an easy and relaxing float. Headwaters has bathrooms, changing rooms, a well stocked store and food trucks for if you’re hungry upon your return. Would highly recommend for an easy and fun river float!

Would highly recommend Headwaters Outfitters for a guided fly fishing trip on the East Fork of the French Broad. Bradley Poag did an excellent job going over techniques preferred flies and where trout would be holding.

Very friendly staff, we did the 3 hour kayaking from 10am-1pm ($45 each person). We came from Chicago, staying in Balsam Grove and decided to kayak here . There are single or tandem kayaks if you have children. There are some logs/boulders on the river but an easy ride. Make sure to wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a ziplock bag for your phone, if not leave it in your car. We did not experience any issues. Great prices for kayaking, would definitely do it again and bring more friends. Thank you to the staff at Headwaters Outfitters!!!

I requested to do an adventurous trip, off the beaten path and Headwaters made it happen. Chris took me into the backcountry of pisgah forest, sliding down banks, crawling over and under logs and rhododendron. It was exactly what I was looking for, wild trout, great scenery and not a sole in sight all day! Will book again
