Adventure Guide To Skiing at Silverton Mountain

  • Silverton Mountain Ski Resort:

    • This is a backcountry-only ski resort, meaning it does not have groomed trails or chairlifts. Instead, skiers access the mountain via snowcats and earn their turns by hopping on a guided backcountry experience. This unique aspect adds an element of adventure and allows for fresh powder throughout the day.
    • The terrain features steep chutes and open bowls, catering to advanced skiers and snowboarders. More than 1,800 acres of skiable terrain await those looking to test their skills in an exhilarating environment.
  • Guided Tours:

    • Many visitors opt for guided tours, which enhance the experience with local insights and safety advice. Highly trained guides lead groups through the most suitable terrain based on daily conditions. It's a great way to gain confidence while navigating this rugged landscape.
    • Expect small group sizes, ensuring a personalized experience and increased safety.
  • Snow Safety Education:

    • Before you hit the slopes, participate in on-site avalanche safety and awareness training. This essential knowledge ensures you’re prepared for controlled but challenging skiing conditions.

Visitor Tips

  • Best Times to Visit: Aim for late December to early March when the snowfall is most consistent. Weekdays are less crowded.
  • What to Bring: Pack avalanche safety gear (if not renting), extra layers, and hydration systems. Don’t forget sunscreen, even in winter!
  • Driving Directions: From Telluride, take CO-145 N to the town of Rico, then turn onto County Road 2. The journey takes about one hour, but plan for potential slow travel due to weather conditions.

Great guides, cool staff, amazing mountain. For having almost zero accommodation, this was well run. Did a heli drop here and was an experience we will never forget. Snow was incredible and the backcountry runs were some of the most challenging I have ever seen.

Great guides. Really steep terrain, it's not for beginners. Tons of fun and adventure. Be ready to hike at 12k feet, not too much hiking, but it's awesome. It's very local and like ski areas used to be 30 years ago. They do an amazing job.

The town of Silverton and the entire area around it is just fabulous! Great dining and a beautiful little town that makes you feel as if you're stepping back in time, and oh yes, the views are just amazing.

Unreal, unforgettable skiing. I will remember this place for the rest of my life. Spent two days skiing the best untracked powder. Even with days old snow, we found amazing glade and bowl skiing. Not for the faint of heart. Respect the mountain, respect your own skills and only do what you are comfortable with. This place is no joke.
