Perito Moreno Glacier, located in the Los Glaciares National Park in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina, is one of Patagonia's most striking natural attractions. Stretching over 30 kilometers, this vast ice formation is unique for its accessibility and the stunning display of its calving, where chunks of ice dramatically break off into the turquoise waters of Lake Argentino. Unlike many glaciers worldwide, Perito Moreno is not receding, offering a rare opportunity to witness a thriving glacial body. The glacier's imposing facade and the picturesque backdrop of snow-capped Andean peaks make it a must-see destination.
The glacier is surrounded by lush forests, inhabited by diverse flora and fauna, including Andean condors and guanacos. Visitors can experience the thunderous sound of ice crashing into the water, a spectacle often considered the highlight of the visit. Accessible walkways allow tourists to observe the glacier from various angles, providing unparalleled photo opportunities.
The indigenous Tehuelche people once inhabited this region and revered the glacier as a sacred entity. Established as a national park in 1937, Los Glaciares is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Experience the majesty of Perito Moreno Glacier, where nature's power is on full display.
Directions: From El Calafate, drive 80 km west via RP11, taking about 1.5 hours.

Great walking platforms to get different views of the glacier. There’s also an option to take a boat out for a closer look. In November, we were able to hear creaks and cracks regularly and we even saw several chunks fall off into the water. It’s a very impressive place to visit. The gift shop has some good postcards and miscellaneous items and the cafe has vegetarian food available which was much appreciated!

The Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina is a must-visit for its sheer size, stunning blue ice, and accessibility. Spanning 30 kilometers, it’s one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. Visitors can enjoy well-maintained walkways, boat tours, or even ice trekking for a closer look. Watching chunks of ice break off and crash into Lago Argentino is unforgettable. Whether in rain or sunshine, the glacier’s beauty is mesmerizing, making it a highlight of any Patagonia trip.

The Perito Moreno Glacier Mini-Trek has got to be one of the most awesome travel adventure we’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It makes us feel blessed that we were able to do this. Seeing a massive glacier stacks and ice fields are incredible enough but trekking through them feels like fireworks exploding in my mind. Make no mistake, this trek is difficult, at least for a senior like me. Now I understand why in Argentina, they strictly limit glacial trekkers to age 65 or less. But it was worth it. Some comments: 1. this was the second day of our 3-day Patagonian trekking and in hindsight maybe it should’ve been the first for maximum leg energy 2. better not to use trekking poles 3. when descending keep your arms widespread like in skiing.

Once in a lifetime experience, otherworldly! We actually did a hike unto the glacier, definitely worth the money and effort. A lot of words are not needed about how special this is.

Amazing place, stunning views. If you can take the boat ride, do it. Alternatively, you can do the hike along the walkway that will provide almost equal views from above.
