The first mile of Coal Creek Trail lulls you into a false sense of ease. A gentle climb through aspen and pine, the scent of damp earth hanging in the cool morning air. But don’t get comfortable—this trail has work to do.
Coal Creek doesn’t believe in switchbacks. It climbs straight up the mountain’s spine, demanding steady legs and deep breaths. The higher you go, the more Durango shrinks below, the Animas River cutting through town like a silver thread. About halfway up, the trail reveals its best-kept secret: an unrelenting ridgeline with views that stretch past the La Plata Mountains. The wind picks up, tugging at your pack, reminding you just how exposed you are.
This is where the trail’s character shifts. The shade of the forest gives way to open slopes scattered with wildflowers in summer and brittle grass in fall. The final push to the top—over 2,300 feet of elevation gain in just under five miles—demands grit. But the reward? An overlook where the San Juans roll endlessly into the horizon, their peaks biting into the sky.
If you’re lucky, you’ll share this summit only with a hawk riding the thermals. There are easier ways to see Durango from above, but none as honest as this. Coal Creek doesn’t give away its views—you have to earn them.

Coal Creek Trailhead is a marvelous spot for exploring the natural beauty of the San Juan Mountains, offering stunning views and trails. Its blend of challenging hikes and serene landscapes provides a unique outdoor experience, though it doesn't reach the rarified height of the world's most iconic natural formations.
