The Black Pyramid was built by King Amenemhat III during the Middle Kingdom of Egypt . It is one of the five remaining pyramids of the original eleven pyramids at Dahshur in Egypt. Originally named Amenemhet is Mighty, the pyramid earned the name Black Pyramid for its dark, decaying appearance as a rubble mound. The Black Pyramid was the first to house both the deceased pharaoh and his queens. Jacques de Morgan, on a French mission, began the excavation on the pyramids at Dahshur in 1892. The German Archaeological Institute of Cairo completed excavation in 1983.

The Black Pyramid is one of the most intriguing and unique pyramids of ancient Egypt, located in the Dahshur necropolis. Built during the reign of Pharaoh Amenemhat III in the 12th Dynasty of the Middle Kingdom (around 1860 BC), it is known for its dark, mudbrick core, which earned it the name "Black Pyramid." Unlike earlier pyramids made primarily of stone, this pyramid's core was constructed from mudbrick and later covered in limestone. Unfortunately, due to its mudbrick construction and the high groundwater in the area, the pyramid began to collapse shortly after its completion, leaving it in a ruined state today. The Black Pyramid is notable for its complex internal design, which included intricate corridors, multiple burial chambers, and passages meant to confuse tomb robbers. Though it was never used as a royal tomb, the pyramid remains a fascinating example of the architectural experimentation during the Middle Kingdom. Despite its condition, the Black Pyramid reflects Egypt’s evolving burial practices and continues to be a site of archaeological interest.

Visited 11 October 2022 Included with the Cairo Pass Dahshur is located approximately an hours drive south east from Giza. The complex contains the Bent and Red Pyramids as well as the Black Pyramid. While it is a ruin it is not able to be accessed by visitors and therefore can only be viewed from afar. It is believed to have been built by Amenemhat III who reigned from 1860-1814BC. It was built in a lower area at Dahshur and due to its mud brick core construction, ground water seeped into the chambers underneath the Pyramid eventually resulting in gradual collapse. What is visible now is the inner core of the pyramid giving it its dark hue and hence its name of the Black Pyramid. The stone casing has long been looted however the capstone for this pyramid can be viewed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
