A grey-blue morning in Sinaia, the cable car hisses and releases hikers onto Cota 2000, where wind and cloud test your resolve and the plateau opens like a hard, high plain. The trail out here moves across stony heath, past the chiseled silhouettes of Babele — the Grannies — and the Sphinx, rock figures that watch the sky as if daring you to keep going.
This route threads history and geology: Peles Castle and Sinaia Monastery speak to Romania’s royal past, while Bran Village and its famous castle carry folk stories that grew into Dracula lore. Geologically the Bucegi rise as a high sandstone and limestone plateau on the southern Carpathians, shaped by glacial grooves and persistent winds into the round forms you see at altitude.
Practical reality follows the romance. Day two starts from Cota 2000 with an easy plateau walk to Babele, then a steady climb to Omu Peak (≈2,505 m). Expect exposed trails, loose scree near summits and a long descent to Bran (≈400 m) — roughly 15 km of hiking and more than 2,100 m of elevation change that day. The tour uses a cable car to reduce initial ascent, includes hut stops, two breakfasts, and entrances to Peles and Bran castles.
Plan for rapid weather swings: layers, waterproofs and good boots matter. Carry at least 2–3 liters of water, snacks for sustained energy, and trekking poles for the steep descent. Start early to avoid afternoon storms, and allow an extra day if you want a guided castle visit or a gentler pace. The route rewards steady hikers with exposed views, sculpted rock forms, and a true cross-section of Bucegi’s high country and mountain culture.
The descent is long and steep (≈2,100 m loss). It’s physically demanding and requires good knees, stable footing, and trekking poles; the guide manages pace for the group.
