The Olden valley has long been a working landscape—farmsteads and seasonal pastures trace routes Norse farmers and later traders used to move goods inland. Geologically, the fjords are glacial cuts: steep-walled troughs carved by ice, now filled with cold, clear seawater that reflects the surrounding rock faces. Culturally, the area retains a sparse, practical character: wooden boathouses, simple fisheries, and guides who read weather and tide with local certainty.
Expect up-close views of mossy cliffs and cascading streams, and the possibility of seals popping their heads near kayaks or sea eagles soaring above. The trip uses wide, stable sit-on-top or touring kayaks suited to novices; no prior experience is required but the guide will teach basic strokes, re-entry, and safety.
Practical guidance: dress in layers and bring a waterproof outer shell, secure electronics in a dry bag, and plan for wind that can pick up in the afternoon — mornings are typically calmer. The 120-minute format makes this an efficient addition to a day that might include glacier hikes or a fjord drive. For those seeking quiet, choose early departures when the fjord is at its most still.
