Iral Bosque Nuboso sits in the Coronado Mountains, about 50 minutes from downtown San José. The reserve protects roughly 1,600 hectares used for conservation, ecotourism and traditional dairy production; more than 50 km of marked trails wind through forests, rivers, meadows and waterfalls. Geologically, the slopes are part of Costa Rica’s central highland volcanic system, with deep, fertile soils that feed dense cloud-forest vegetation and frequent orographic cloud cover.
Birders come for high-altitude species like the resplendent quetzal; mammals such as the danta (tapir), mountain goats and occasional cougars inhabit quieter reaches. Local culture here blends small-farm life with conservation-minded tourism—the on-site restaurant sources fresh local dairy and produce.
Practical guidance: plan a full day (most visitors spend 6–8 hours), choose routes that match your fitness—options range from easy loops to steeper ridge walks—and start early to avoid afternoon showers and maximize wildlife activity. Trails can be muddy with exposed roots; stable footwear and a waterproof layer are essential. Bring water, insect repellent and binoculars, and give wildlife space. The Iral restaurant offers lunch if you prefer a sit-down meal before returning to San José.
This day pass is ideal for hikers seeking accessible cloud-forest experience close to the city—expect varied terrain, rewarding viewpoints, and rich birdlife.
