Learn Kayaking on Biscayne Bay: Private Lessons at Pelican Harbor

Pelican Harbor on Biscayne Bay in North Miami Beach, Florida is where One on One Kayak Lessons brings new paddlers and returning students to the water. This 90-minute private lesson, taught by certified instructor Manny Castillo, focuses on core strokes, safety, and trip planning on protected bay waters. The learning area includes calm channels, mangrove-edged shorelines, and open bay flats that reveal oyster bars and seagrass beds-ideal conditions for building confidence without strong currents or heavy boat traffic. Arrive ready to learn: iPaddle provides sit-on-top kayaks, paddles, and all safety equipment, and lessons are offered in English or Spanish. The pace is deliberate and tailored; private sessions and small group classes (up to four people) mean instructors can correct posture, refine forward and sweep strokes, and practice rescues close to shore. You'll practice balance drills, efficient stroking, and basic self- and assisted-recovery techniques that make future outings safer and more enjoyable. What makes this offering stand out is its combination of professional instruction and context: Pelican Harbor's shallow flats and nearby mangrove corridors offer a compact classroom on clean Biscayne Bay water. Beyond technique, the class covers local trip planning - reading wind and tide for the bay, where to launch, and how to avoid common hazards like boat wakes and shallow oyster beds. For visitors, that practical local knowledge turns a pleasant paddle into a repeatable day trip. Expect wildlife in the lesson area: egrets and herons are common, and you may spot juvenile fish in the seagrass. The geology is simple-limestone reef rubble and carbonate muds-but the living shoreline features provide habitat and real-world navigational features for new paddlers. Lessons are suitable for beginners age 13 and up and for intermediate paddlers seeking technique refinement. Practical details: arrive 20 minutes early to rig and receive a safety briefing; parking uses PayByPhone. Classes last 90 minutes and are scheduled to start promptly. If you bring your own gear, staff will let you unload at the ramp before you park. Because sessions run close to shore, they're forgiving weather-wise, but instructors reserve the right to postpone if winds or squalls make the bay unsafe. One on One Kayak Lessons at Pelican Harbor is a fast, focused way to turn curiosity into competence on Biscayne Bay - ideal for travelers who want a safe introduction or a targeted tune-up before exploring more open water. Lessons are delivered by iPaddle instructors who follow ACA-aligned techniques and practical shore drills; you'll get individualized feedback, hands-on coaching, and tips for reading local wind and tide. Private one-on-one sessions are ideal for families, travelers short on time, or paddlers preparing to rent a touring kayak for longer Biscayne Bay excursions, making each outing safer and more enjoyable and confident.
