Make Your Own Candle in Rapid City: In-Studio Pouring Workshop at Urban Glow

At 623 St Joseph St in Rapid City, South Dakota, Urban Glow Candle Co. offers a compact, hands-on candle-pouring workshop that makes a calm, creative counterpoint to the wide-open Black Hills beyond town. Sessions run about 1.5 hours and accommodate up to ten people, making it an accessible solo project, a quiet date idea, or a small-group stop between hikes and sightseeing. You begin by selecting a vessel, then blend from a library of scents before pouring soy-based wax under guided instruction; after designing a label, your candle needs roughly two hours to cool, so guests often stroll downtown or return later to pick up their finished piece. A $20 deposit holds your reservation and applies to the total; final pricing depends on size: Small single-wick $29.99, Medium double-wick $39.99, Large double-wick $49.99, and XL triple-wick $59.99. Deposits are non-refundable for no-shows or cancellations within 24 hours, and sessions may be scheduled day or evening depending on the studio calendar. What makes this experience notable for visitors is how hands-on, small-scale craftsmanship links to the larger sense of place in the Black Hills region. Rapid City is the usual base for trailheads, alpine meadows, and granite formations—Ponderosa pines and mule deer are common sights—and Urban Glow provides a dry, creative pit stop after wet-weather hikes or before an evening drive toward Mount Rushmore and the forested ridgelines. The studio’s setup emphasizes scent education and technique rather than spectacle: staff guide temperature control, wick centering, and safe pouring practices so your candle burns cleanly at home. For visitors who want a keepsake that recalls a trail or viewpoint, the fragrance library includes woodsy notes, smoke, and resin-tinged blends that pair well with the Black Hills’ pine and granite character. Groups can book together—the 10-person maximum keeps sessions intimate—and the studio’s downtown location means coffee, galleries, and gear shops are steps away while you wait for cooling. Bring a camera to document scent choices and label design, and plan light layers if you step outside into Rapid City’s variable weather between pouring and pickup. Accessibility information is not provided in the listing; the meeting point is 623 St Joseph St, Rapid City, SD 57701, and any specific assistance requests should be confirmed with the studio when you reserve. This workshop is an easy, low-impact way to make a personal souvenir that reflects the Black Hills’ scents and textures—ideal for travelers who want a crafted memory after a day on the trails. Reserve with a $20 deposit, allow roughly ninety minutes for the session plus two hours cooling, and plan to collect your finished candle the same day or the next business day if you pour near closing. Urban Glow makes meaningful gifts.
