Just a short drive from the historic streets of St. Augustine, Florida, the Matanzas River offers an immersive eco-adventure perfect for paddlers of all levels. Launching from Genung's Fish Camp, this unique kayak tour invites outdoor enthusiasts to glide through a thriving lagoon ecosystem, home to dolphins, vibrant birdlife, and abundant fish species. Here, the waterway snakes through oyster beds and mangrove labyrinths, creating a dynamic landscape that changes dramatically with the tides. Whether you're a seasoned kayaker or trying your first paddle, this trip blends peaceful exploration with the thrill of close encounters with nature.
The Matanzas River is a vital estuary that links inland waters with the Atlantic Ocean. Its oyster fields provide shelter and nourishment for countless creatures, while the mangroves stabilize the shoreline and offer sanctuary to juvenile fish and birds. This eco trip spotlights these natural features in a way few tours can, emphasizing sustainability and wildlife preservation. Tour guides share insights about the local environment, pointing out unique flora such as red mangroves and sparking curiosity about the region's marine life.
One of the most memorable moments comes when pods of dolphins occasionally swim alongside your kayak, playfully surfacing in the calm lagoon waters. Birders will delight in spotting coastal species like great blue herons and snowy egrets perched silently amid the mangroves. The tides play a big role in shaping the experience—high tide opens up hidden waterways while low tide reveals intricate mudflats bustling with life.
Genung's Fish Camp, the launch point at 291 Cubbedge Rd, is a local institution deeply connected to the area's maritime traditions. This business not only provides expert gear and instruction but also ensures every trip minimizes impact on the delicate ecosystems.
Whether you’re a family looking for an engaging day outdoors or a solo paddler seeking solitude in nature, this eco trip delivers an authentic adventure. Its blend of accessible paddling, ecological richness, and wildlife encounters makes it a standout choice when visiting the St. Augustine area.
