Peneda's Glacial Landscape Geotour with Keen Tours

Located in northern Portugal, the Peneda-Gerês National Park stands as the country’s only national park and a wild canvas sculpted by ice-age glaciers millennia ago. Keen Tours brings this compelling story to life with their Peneda's Glacial Landscape Geotour, a full-day adventure spotlighting the rugged geological past that shaped the region’s striking terrain.

This in-depth 5-hour hike unpacks the traces left by the last glaciation, guiding visitors through a terrain rich with geological markers. Walk among well-preserved moraines—ancient rock and debris left behind by retreating ice—and thick lodgement-till deposits that reveal the immense pressure and movement of glaciers. The landscape itself becomes a record, with massive erratic boulders scattered across the plateau and rock formations like roche-moutonnée indicating the former direction of ice flow.

More than just a geological outing, the tour immerses travelers in the deep connection between the landscape and human adaptation. Small villages clinging to cirque slopes and fields enclosed by traditional stone fences demonstrate how locals have long relied on the unique glacial soils for agriculture and settlement. The experience culminates at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peneda, an 18th-century religious site built atop a 13th-century shrine, offering a glimpse into how geology intersects with culture and spirituality in this remote terrain.

Keen Tours ensures a seamless day with included round-trip transport from Braga and surrounding towns, lunch, snacks, and a knowledgeable guide equipped with first aid skills. The company’s commitment to sustainability elevates the experience with contributions to local conservation and carbon offsetting. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast or an adventurous hiker seeking a raw slice of Portugal’s natural history, this tour uncovers layers of earth, time, and human resilience.
