On the banks of the winding Tejo River in Portugal’s Castelo Branco district lies a landscape marked by raw geological edges and wildlife-rich cliffs—the Portas de Ródão. Beira Tours offers a distinctive 4.5-hour boat trip here, peeling back layers of natural grandeur and history on one seamless journey. Departing from the heart of Castelo Branco, this trip guides adventurers through the imposing natural monument of Portas de Ródão, where steep schist rock formations frame the river’s course. The route also includes a close-up visit to the Castle of King Wamba, a fortress steeped in early medieval history, perched dramatically above Vila Velha de Ródão.
This tour is far more than a sightseeing cruise. Guests gain rare views of griffon vultures circling overhead, a vivid reminder of the area’s rich avian biodiversity. Along the way, windswept viewpoints like the Miradouro das Portas do Almourão offer panoramic snapshots of the river canyon, while stops at the Foz do Cobrão village and the archaeological site at Enxarrique provide context to the region’s cultural tapestry.
