The Superior Fall Trail Races offer an intense and rewarding challenge for endurance athletes. Located in Lutsen, Minnesota, these races traverse the rugged Sawtooth Mountain Range via the Superior Hiking Trail. Runners push through extreme elevation changes, technical trails, and stunning landscapes, making this one of the toughest ultramarathons in the United States. The races consist of 100-mile, 50-mile, and 26.2-mile (marathon) distances, all run point-to-point, concluding at the Caribou Highlands Lodge on Lutsen Mountain—just 4.5 hours north of Minneapolis. Participants encounter whitewater rivers, old-growth boreal forests, and breathtaking views of Lake Superior’s vast shoreline.
The Superior 100 Mile Trail Race was founded in 1991 and holds the distinction of being the 9th oldest 100-mile trail race in the U.S.. Runners consider it part of the nation’s most revered ultra-distance races, with many comparing its difficulty to Western States, Leadville, and Wasatch 100.
Athletes must tackle a course that includes over 21,000 feet of elevation gain, relentless ascents, technical descents, and terrain that tests even experienced trail runners. The wild, remote atmosphere enhances the challenge, requiring physical endurance and mental resilience. At the same time, runners enjoy spectacular views of the largest freshwater lake in the world and traverse towering ridges, cascading waterfalls, and lush pine & birch forests.
This race is more than competition; it fosters a deep connection between runners, volunteers, and the environment. Through its partnership with the Superior Hiking Trail Association, the event has donated $45,000 annually to trail maintenance efforts. Volunteers contribute hundreds of hours, ensuring that the Superior Hiking Trail remains accessible for future generations.
