About Samur Reserve

Samur Reserve is a vital protected area in Azerbaijan, renowned for its diverse forest ecosystems and rich biodiversity along the Samur River, offering unique opportunities for nature observation and ecological study.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Samur Reserve is located in the northeastern part of Azerbaijan, near the border with Russia, encompassing a diverse range of forest habitats dominated by broadleaf and mixed forests. Established in 1969, the reserve protects unique ecosystems in the Samur River valley and its adjoining river basins. The area features the Hyrcanian forest type, a rare and ancient temperate forest that harbors many endemic plant and animal species. Within the reserve, visitors are likely to encounter species such as the East Caucasian tur, lynx, brown bear, and a variety of birds including the Caucasian black grouse and peregrine falcon. The terrain varies from river valleys to low mountainous zones, shaping a mosaic of habitats that support rich flora spanning hornbeam, oak, beech, and alder trees. Samur Reserve's ecological significance lies in its role as a refuge for several endangered and rare species, while also contributing to climate regulation and water conservation in the Caucasus region. Although public access is limited to protect sensitive environments, the reserve offers scientific study and controlled eco-tourism activities such as guided nature walks and bird watching. The surrounding region provides opportunities for hiking and experiencing the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan. With its pristine nature and biodiversity, Samur Reserve appeals to conservationists, researchers, and outdoor enthusiasts interested in exploring one of the Caucasus' most important natural sanctuaries.
