About Skellig Michael UNESCO World Heritage Site

Skellig Michael is a remarkable site located off the southwest coast of Ireland, known for its breathtaking monastic ruins and unique seabird populations.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Skellig Michael, situated approximately 12 kilometers from the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, is a striking twin-pinnacle rock island that ascends sharply from the Atlantic Ocean. At the summit, a well-preserved early Christian monastery showcases a collection of beehive huts where monks lived between the 6th and 8th centuries. This site is a significant example of how early Christianity spread across Europe in secluded and remote environments. The surrounding waters and the island's grassy slopes are home to an array of wildlife, most notably large colonies of puffins and gannets. Skellig Michael's unique, rugged terrain and its rich history have contributed to its national and international appeal, attracting scholars, naturalists, and avid travelers. Its remote and challenging access requires a boat trip across often turbulent waters, adding to the adventure sought by many visitors.
