Climbing the Third Flatiron: A Classic Climb Above Boulder

Standing proud against Boulder’s skyline, the Third Flatiron is a testament to the region’s natural beauty and climbing heritage. Its sweeping sandstone face, glowing in hues of red and gold, beckons climbers to scale its storied heights, promising a journey as memorable as the summit itself.

From the Chautauqua Trailhead, the approach trail meanders through pine groves and open meadows, a prelude to the grandeur ahead. As the Third Flatiron comes into view, its graceful lines and sheer size stir equal parts awe and anticipation.

The Standard Route, a 5.4 classic, offers a 1,200-foot adventure across nine pitches of steady climbing. The sandstone’s texture is welcoming, the holds generous, and the line unmistakable. The early pitches build confidence, each move drawing you higher above Boulder’s ever-shrinking streets. But by the middle pitches, the exposure sharpens. The wind feels alive, wrapping around you, and the city below becomes a mosaic of green and gray.

Near the top, the ridge narrows, pulling your focus into the here and now. The summit rewards your effort with panoramic views: the Rockies unfold in jagged waves to the west, and the plains stretch infinitely to the east.

The descent is no less thrilling. Two airy rappels carry you back to the earth, where the sandstone still hums faintly with the memory of your climb. For a brief moment, you feel weightless, suspended between the towering rock and the endless sky.

Easily accessible gorgeous hike. Be prepared for a lot of elevation over short period as well as a heavily trafficked hike. View was absolutely worth it though.

This place is amazing. The higher you go the more rewarding the experience will be. Don’t be afraid to higher than the trail leads, but safely of course. This is a must experience in Boulder.

For mine and my son's first hike it was beautiful. The weather was beautiful and the people were kind and saying enjoy your hike. There are small rocks where you can stop and rest your feet as well. We will surely be back

Great, simple hike, especially for beginners. Such an awesome way to see the whole city. Can be very busy on holidays and weekends so plan accordingly. Parking can be a struggle on busy days. Overall a great experience and I recommend for newcomers and locals alike!

10/2/21 - To get here go to, Chautauqua Trail, Boulder is a 1.2-mile out-and-back path. Lots of people come here. Parking is hard to find. Download the app (Park Meter), on the weekend it says you have to pay but it’s free!!! Third Flatiron is just one of them, there’s probably 8th Flatiron. You will end up on the base of the 3rd flatiron if you do the moderate loop. Look on your right, left, up to see all the views. Going up from the parking lot is incline, if it is your first time hiking a bit difficult but you can stop and go. To get to the ROYAL ARCH, you must hike, but it’s closed (will probably open next spring). Still worth a hike. It doesn’t matter which one you pick it will bring you back down close to the parking lot. More views and more challenging do the moderate, you are already up there.
