Exploring Moab, Utah: 3-Day Itinerary for December

Moab, Utah, is a magnificent hub for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Set against a backdrop of stunning red rock formations, this small town is known for its unique landscapes, outdoor activities, and proximity to two major national parks: Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. December in Moab offers cooler temperatures, averaging between 30°F and 50°F, while allowing for fewer crowds as tourists tend to shy away from the colder climate. However, the crisp air and clear skies are perfect for hiking, and you might even get to enjoy lightly snowy landscapes that lend a serene beauty to the region.

In addition to exploring national parks, nearby hot springs offer a warm escape after a day of adventuring, and there are various trails that lead to beautiful waterfalls. Be mindful of winter weather and road conditions, especially if you plan on hiking or driving to more remote areas.

Day 1: Arrival and Historic Exploration

Morning:

  • Arrive in Moab: Get settled in your accommodations. Consider staying in a local hotel or a cozy cabin to experience the warmth of the town outside of the cold weather.
  • Breakfast: Enjoy breakfast at a local café, such as Moab Diner, known for its hearty meals and friendly service.

Afternoon:

  • Visit Arches National Park: Begin your journey by visiting Arches National Park (about a 10-minute drive from downtown Moab). Take a scenic drive through the park to catch iconic landmarks like the Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch.
    • Interesting Fact: Arches is home to around 2,000 natural stone arches and is a great spot for photography, especially in the soft winter light.
  • Hiking: If you’re up for it, take the short trail to Delicate Arch (3 miles round trip). Note that it can be icy, so wear good traction shoes.

Evening:

  • Dinner: Savor a meal at Zax Restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed, and they offer a range of pizzas and beer.
  • Relax: Consider stargazing if conditions are clear. Moab has some of the darkest skies in the country, making it great for catching a glimpse of the stars.

Day 2: Waterfalls and Hot Springs

Morning:

  • Breakfast: Grab breakfast at Sabaku Sushi for something different.
  • Waterfall Hike: Head to Kane Creek Falls (approximately a 15-minute drive). This hike is moderately easy, taking you to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by red rocks. The hike is about 2 miles round trip.
    • Note: Depending on the weather, the flow of the waterfall may vary. Check conditions beforehand!

Afternoon:

  • Lunch: Have a picnic-style lunch packed or grab a quick bite from a local sandwich shop.
  • Hot Springs: After your hike, drive to Ranking Hot Springs (around 30 minutes away). This natural hot spring is a hidden gem where you can relax in warm waters.
    • Tip: Bring a towel and enjoy soaking while surrounded by stunning views.

Evening:

  • Dinner: Try a meal at The Spoke on Center, known for its welcoming atmosphere and delicious burgers.
  • Local Knowledge: Look out for local events or live music happening in town, especially since December can see holiday-themed gatherings.

Day 3: Adventure and Exploration

Morning:

  • Breakfast: Start your day at The Love Muffin Café for breakfast burritos or homemade pastries.
  • Canyonlands National Park: Head to Canyonlands National Park (about a 30-minute drive to the Island in the Sky district), where you can take in breathtaking views from various overlooks.
    • Interesting Fact: The park’s landscape is divided into four districts, offering different experiences, but Island in the Sky is the most accessible.

Afternoon:

  • Hiking at Canyonlands: Take the Mesa Arch Trail (0.5 miles round trip), a quick but iconic hike. The arch frames stunning views and is especially beautiful around noon when the sun illuminates the rock.
  • Lunch: Pack a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic areas in the park.

Evening:

  • Return to Moab: Head back to town for dinner. Consider a local brewery like Moab Brewery.
  • Last Night: Stroll through downtown Moab. Check out local shops for souvenirs, art, and unique finds.

In December, Moab offers a quieter yet breathtaking experience, with the added charm that comes from cooler weather and lesser crowds. With immersive adventures in national parks and natural hot springs, your trip will be memorable and rejuvenating.

Very fun trail but not for the novice rider. Greg and give a 2 ish hour buffer before sunset as the trail gets tricky after dark. (Not fun but a good story). Walking your bike is very normal and regular yet frustrating. You’ll feel it in your legs the next day though.

Such a fun trail! My 13 year old son and I conquered this trail recently. It's (11) fairly difficult miles round-trip. Weather can and often changes on a dime. No matter what - always bring more water than you think you'll need. Be sure to consider having an extra chain, tube, etc. Very technical trail with multiple spots that, depending on your skill level, may require walking your bike. Overall a 10 out of 10 experience.

An amazingly grueling ride! Views are fantastic and the experience can't be replicated. I would highly recommend at least 75 ounces of water. We rode it in July starting at 8:30am. By the last 1 hour, the heat escalates quite a bit! I would recommend starting no later than 7:30. Very difficult. I would say it's doable by most kids who have ridden at least 1 year of NICA.

The Moab Slickrock Trail has quickly become one of my favorite mountain bike rides! This trail offers a challenging technical experience, with steep climbs and tight, rocky switchbacks that will test your skills. One great feature is that electric-assist mountain bikes are allowed, making it accessible for a wider range of riders. The stunning vistas along the trail had us frequently stopping to snap photos. We chose to ride during sunset, transitioning into the night with bike lights, which was nothing short of magical. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the changing light highlighted the unique rock formations, transforming the landscape before our eyes. The way the rocks shifted colors and shadows in the fading light was an unforgettable sight. If you're looking for a trail that offers both technical riding and breathtaking scenery, the Moab Slickrock Trail is a must-ride!

Bike trails are amazing here. Get ready for some hard out of saddle climbs while you combine it to fast quick downhills
