Recommend hiking the M-Trail to get you acclimated to the elevation (altitude hike test), that's what our friends did for me to get me used to breathing in colder and less oxygenated air.
Elevation starts at about 3300 ft and gets to about 5000 ft.
Hard trail with many stops for this asthmatic HTX girl upwards ~ 4-5 hrs hike to the top and 1-1.5 hrs hike down. We crossed 4-5 frozen creeks, 1 bridge and endless switch-backs (I thought were never ending).
We went just after the random snow this past weekend, bought some shoe-spikes (much needed, worth every penny) at the rate we were moving would have taken forever without them.
Saw animal footprints but no animal sightings other then a squirrel šæļø.
The views were breathtakingly beautiful.

The hike to Lava Lake in Montana was easy, and the views were absolutely surreal. Iām definitely coming back again!

I loved this hike. Itās a decent workout on the way up but absolutely worth it. The lake views at the top are stunning. Itās about 6 miles round trip. We passed lots of people on the trail but it wasnāt overcrowded by any means. Everyone was friendly and we met several really nice people while relaxing by the lake. I didnāt see any bears but definitely carried bear spray just in case. Highly recommend doing this one!

Truly stunning lake at the top. As of mid May, the trail was still completely covered in snow, so spikes would be highly beneficial on this trail, perhaps even snowshoes. Also, there was a fallen tree blocking the trail early on, but you can simply go around and resume on the trail.
At the top of the trail, it was truly quiet and tranquil, and we were the only people there at that time. The trail is very quiet, with just enough traffic in the snow to leave where the trail is.

One of the most beautiful hikes Iāve ever taken. The path is well-defined, rocky, and at a steady small incline. It is all wooded and follows a river, which is so nice to listen to through the hike. The lake at the top was beautiful and so worth the hike to get there. Arrived at around 8:30 am and it was relatively quiet at the time. By the time we were headed back a few hours later, there was a steady stream of people and dogs heading towards the lake. We were happy to have arrived before it got very crowded.
